Investigation of Children's Feelings and Thoughts about Earthquake

Öz

In the study, it was aimed to examine the feelings and thoughts of children attending and not attending preschool education about the earthquake. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group consisted of children aged five to six years (n=24). Children were identified by snowball sampling method. The data of the study were collected with a semi-structured "Interview Form" prepared in line with the literature review and expert opinions. Descriptive content analysis was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, it was determined that children mostly emphasized the physical effects of earthquake while defining the earthquake; that they obtained information about earthquake from telephone and television; that the information was about the physical effects of earthquake; that physical damages would occur during an earthquake; that it was necessary to do the collapse-trap-hold action and escape during an earthquake; and that they would be sad/scared during an earthquake. It was recommended that parents and teachers be provided with accurate and age-appropriate information about the earthquake, and that trainings be organized to raise children's awareness and emotional preparedness for the earthquake.

Öz

Araştırmada, okul öncesi eğitime devam eden ve etmeyen çocukların depremle ilgili duygu ve düşüncelerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim (fenomenoloji) deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu beş-altı yaşlarındaki çocuklar (n=24) oluşturmaktadır. Çocuklar, kartopu örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın verileri, literatür incelemesi ve uzman görüşleri doğrultusunda hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış “Görüşme Formu” ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde, betimsel içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, çocukların depremi tanımlarken en fazla fiziksel etkileri üzerinde durdukları; depremle ilgili bilgileri telefon ve televizyondan edindikleri; bilgilerin depremin fiziksel etkileri ile ilgili olduğu; deprem anında fiziksel hasarlar meydana geleceği; deprem anında çök-kapan-tutun eyleminin yapılması ve kaçmak gerektiği; yine deprem anında üzülüp/korkacağını ifade ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Ebeveynlere ve öğretmenlere, çocuklara depremle ilgili doğru ve yaşlarına uygun bilgilerin sağlanması, çocukların depremle ilgili bilinçlenmeleri ve duygusal hazırlıklarını artırmaya yönelik eğitimlerin düzenlenmesi önerilmiştir.
