Preschool Teachers’ and Pre-service Preschool Teachers’ Perception Regarding the Concept of “Symmetry”
Abstract
Early childhood mathematics education has become more important over the years. The concept of symmetry has an important place in mathematics and is effective in establishing connections between fields such as geometry, probability, problem solving, and algebra. Although symmetry concept is not a concept that is emphasized in preschool period, the skill of being similar and matching has an important place. In this respect, the aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of preschool teachers and preschool teacher candidates regarding the concept of symmetry. This present study was carried appropriate to case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and the participants were included in the study with convenience sampling method. The study included 14 preschool teachers and 62 pre-service preschool teachers. In the study, semi-structured interview form created by the researchers was used to collect data. Participants were asked to explain the concept of symmetry by writing and drawing, and to write a story containing the concept of symmetry. The data were assessed in accordance with the content analysis method. The findings showed that the participants had limited understanding about the concept of symmetry. In their symmetry representations, it was determined that they generally use vertical symmetry as well as reflection symmetry as the type of symmetry.
